Having run in no regular season track meets this spring, expectations were not high for the Yazoo City High School track team heading into the district and regional track meets the past two consecutive weekends.
The Indians and Lady Indians, however, had 21 runners advance to the regional from district (five first place finishes) and 12 runners advance from regional to the State Tournament on April 22 at Pontotoc.
"I am very pleased with the results and with how hard they have worked despite not being able to run in any regular season track meets," said YHS head track coach Matt Migliazza. "Districts was our first meet of the season."
This past weekend at the Regional in Olive Branch, the boys 4x200 meter relay team of Chris Bell, Chris Burnett, Travion Reese, and Jacquaris Rogers finished in first place to advance to the State Tournament. Bell also finished second place in the 200 meter run.
Other Indians qualifying for the State tournament were David Love (100m - 4th place), Burnett (400m - 3rd place), Jamarcus Reasor (300m hurdles - 3rd place), and Eric Wheeler (3200m - 4th place).
For the Lady Indians, the 4x100 relay team of Shamhya Davis, Jazmine Diew, Malaysia Fox and Doukeria Martin advanced to State with a 4th place finish while Mack also advances with a 4th place finish in the 400 meter run.
