Yazoo County residents could see a tax increase of 6.6 mills based on the county board and the county school district’s request.
The Yazoo County Board of Supervisors plans to increase its millage rate by 2.10 mills from 70.8 to 72.90 mills. And based on the Yazoo County School District’s ad valorem tax request, 4.5 mills would be added to the county’s intentions, increasing the total millage rate by 6.6 mills.
The county board will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget on Sept. 3 at 9 a.m. at the Board of Supervisors meeting room, located at 211 E. Broadway in Yazoo City.
“Yazoo County has not raised your ad valorem tax millage rate in 10 years,” the county’s public notice states. “The last time Yazoo County changed your ad valorem tax millage rate was when it was reduced in fiscal year 2019-2020, and that reduced rate has remained the same through the current fiscal year. However, the continuous rise in inflation that has occurred over the past several years has finally reached a point where the County has no choice but to now raise the millage rate.”
Any citizen of Yazoo County is invited to attend this public hearing on the proposed ad valorem tax increase and will be allowed to speak for a reasonable amount of time and offer tangible evidence before any vote is taken.
Chancery Clerk Quint Carver said he did not feel the public would be interested in attending the public hearing, adding that “nobody reads the newspaper anymore.” He added that most complaints would come in December when residents received their tax bills.
