Kenneth Hampton, a former local police officer and Tchula police chief, has been hired by the city council to lead the Yazoo City Police Department.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen hired Hampton during Monday’s board meeting on a 5-0 vote.
The city council wanted their search for the new leader of the local police force to be a local candidate, someone dedicated to the community he will be serving.
Richard Brooks, who served as interim chief, will remain with the department as well. Richard Brooks, who served as the interim police chief, will also remain with the local force.
And Hampton said he is ready for the job.
“I am excited about this opportunity,” he said. “Our community has had a lot of shootings, and our streets are filled with scooters and ATVs. I will get on top of those two things as soon as possible. The next month, those issues will be my concentrated efforts.”
