Benton Academy fought to the finish in the season opener with sophomore quarterback James Patterson crossing the goal line in the final second of the game.
It was the Raiders only score of the night, however, as Winona Christian walked a way with a 35-6 victory.
Raiders senior Garrett Vandevere led the defense with seven tackles.
Winona was closing in to score on the first drive of the game until Patterson recovered a fumble on the 10 yard line to give the Raiders possession.
Waylen Dewitt had an eight-yard gain, but the Stars defense held and forced a punt.
Dewitt and fellow running back Daniel Washington were able to make some big plays at times throughout the game, but Winona’s defense was able to keep pressure on the Raiders offense.
Bryce Ables made a tackle to bring up fourth down and 11 on the following drive, but Winona completed a deep pass for first and goal and scored on a two-yard quarterback keeper for a 7-0 lead with 3:45 left in the first quarter. Winona added another touchdown with 12 seconds left in the first quarter for a 13-0 lead after a failed extra point kick attempt.
Dalton Robles had back-to-back tackles for loss in the second quarter to lead a spirited defensive effort, but Winona added another score for a 19-0 halftime lead.
The Raiders must put the loss behind them this week as Benton travels to Columbus Christian this week.
