he Yazooo City Indians and Gentry Rams were knotted at 12 at halftime this past Friday night in what looked like a game that was going down to the wire.
The Indians, however, had other things in mind as they blew things open in the second half outscoring the Rams 30-6 en route to a 42-18 final.
Yazoo City improved to 3-3 overall with the win, but more importantly 1-0 in district.
Quarterback Tyler Taylor scored on a two-yard run with 9:29 left in the second quarter to open the games scoring.
The Rams anwered right back with a score of their own on their very next possession, and the score was tied at six.
Desmond Johnson scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night with a 41-yard run to push the lead to 12-6 with 5:24 left in the half, but Gentry tied things up again just minutes before the first half buzzer sounded and both teams entered the locker rooms at halftime even.
The back and forth battle ended in the first half though as the Indians showed their dominance in the second half.
Johnson scored on a two-yard run on the Indians’ first possession of the half and followed that up with a 35-yard on the next possession to push the lead to 26-12 at the end of the third quarter.
The Indians went on an eight-play scoring drive that ended with a 43-yard pass from Tyler to Amarion Brown to open the fourth quarter.
Taylor’s race around the end on the two-point conversion was true, giving YCHS a 34-12 lead.
After forcing Gentry to punt on their ensuing possession, Taylor and Brown hooked up again from 16 yards out for another score.
Taylor added another two-point run to make the score 42-12.
The Rams added their final score with 1:33 left in the contest on a five yard run.
Johnson had an impressive night, rushing for 201 yards on 21 carries and 3 TD's.
Taylor added 72 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown, and other rushers were Cormarion McBride with 11 yards, Tobias McGee had five yards, and Darius Wheeler had four yards.
Taylor also completed 3-of-9 passes for 68 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Brown was the leading receiver with two receptions for 58 yards and 2 TD's and Marquez Green had one reception for 10 yards.
Jaquarius Nelson led the defense with 6.5 tackles followed by Brown and Jalen Barber with four apiece, Johnny Barber with 3.5, and Maurice Booker with 2.5.
