I was sad to read about the passing of Mr. Aubry Brent Sr.
I attended Linwood Elementary during my fifth and sixth grade years. Mr. Brent was my principal during both years. He operated a top-notch school with limited resources and always got the most out of his teachers, who got the most out of us students.
I remember him fondly as being a strict but fair man who taught students to respect one another.
While sitting around the dinner table this past Saturday night, I told a story that involved Mr. Brent during my sixth grade year when a fellow student brought a six pack of beer to school. Mr. Brent told the student he “Should not have brought his daddy’s beer to school,” to which the student responded, “That’s not my daddy’s. It’s my momma’s beer.”
I remember Mr. Brent handling that situation in a stern but fair manner. We didn’t see the fellow classmate for a few days after that.
Mr. Brent was one of a kind. Perhaps one of the last of the great principals. I wish there were more like him around these days.
