A 15-year-old juvenile will be charged as an adult in connection with Yazoo County’s recent shooting near an apartment complex last Thursday night.
Marquez Butler, 15, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a shooting on Corrine Booker Drive, formerly known as Shady Drive, around 7:15 p.m. last Thursday.
The victim, a 15-year-old male, was shot near Oakhaven Apartments. The Herald does not identify victims of a crime, but Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said he is in stable but serious condition.
McCoy added that the case remains under investigation with additional charges as a possibility.
“The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as more details emerge,” McCoy said. “I am committed to ensuring justice is served and urge anyone with further information to come forward.”
Anyone with any information related to this crime may call or text 662-763-8311.
In other sheriff’s department news, McCoy said his team continues to battle excessive speeding among Yazoo County’s drivers. He added that deputies are unable to use radar on the roadways.
“This is an issue that we have literally on every road in this county,” McCoy said. “This is an issue that I’m daily trying to figure out how to address. With the low number of deputies that I’m budgeted to have, this is a serious problem that desperately needs attention.”
With limited resources and few options, McCoy said there is not much that his department can do. However, his team remains vigilant in combating the issue.
“I know it’s hard when people are racing up and down through your neighborhoods,” he said. “But we are doing what we can with the little we have.”
