Dear Editor,
Wade Woods, J.W. Passon and Judge Hudson Thomas were the most passionate people I had an opportunity to associate with. When they decided to hire an instructor at the Detention Center, they chose me. It is no way they came upon my name just by accident. I let this community figure out the reason why.
It was hard for me to climb those stairs every morning to see those young boys and girls. Mot of whom I taught. It became easier because they knew me, and I knew them. Mr. Woods and Mr. Passon were good for and to those children. Wade took an interest in one black boy and kept him out of the prison system. Only Wade can tell that story.
I left because it was a little more than I could bear. I recommended a recreational yard for the children, but it never happened. Approaching the Board of Supervisors was a problem. A volleyball court, a shuffleboard court and a basketball court would give this community more recreation inside than outside. This community is not getting the service we elected them for.
We have a mayor who made a living off the children. We have an alderwoman who has a husband as a senator and a son who is the president of the Board of Supervisors. There is something wrong with that picture and only you the voters can end this trend and set our children free, and give parents more options to raise our children.
Mr. Woods, Mr. Passon and Judge had a job our elected officials did not appreciate, but for me and I speak for those children you helped, you made a difference in their lives and we thank you. That is what we elect our leaders to do. It’s time this community woke up and make your vote count.
Sincerely,
Coach Johnny Staples
