Ice skating in the Mississippi Delta? The idea sounds a little unbelievable.
But thanks to the Yazoo County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the unbelievable will become a reality next month in Yazoo City. The Yazoo Yuletide Festival will be held near the recently unveiled wall mural on Mound Street on December 2-4.
“This free event will have many different vendors ranging from local favorites to out-of-state unique vendors,” said Madisyn Cummins, with the CVB. “We plan on having anything that you could want from hot chocolate to arts and crafts. The real showstopper will be the 3,000 square foot portable ice-skating rink to give you that family friendly and holiday fun that we don’t normally have in the Mississippi Delta winter.”
The idea sparked from a brainstorming session on what could be offered to Yazoo children that would allow them to experience something uncommon in the Delta. After few ideas, one stuck out for the CVB organizers. Ice-skating was perfect.
“We are always wanting something new and exciting for the kids to do that they don’t normally get to do,” Cummins said. “We know there’s no Christmas like a Yazoo Christmas so we decided to do this as a free event that everyone can enjoy and make some great memories in the process.”
The free event will begin during the Yazoo City Christmas Parade on Dec. 2 and will continue until Dec. 4.
“We always like to show that we may not be as big and busy as other places, but we will always be a group of inviting people,” Cummins said. “I think that’s what makes Yazoo such a unique place. This will be an event that may have been done before, but not the Yazoo way.”
The Christmas season is already in full effect for Yazoo with the return of the downtown lights, community parades and the annual storefront decorating contest.
“We always hear ‘there is nothing to do in Yazoo,’” Cummins added. “We want to keep the season full of fun and exciting things. Maybe in the process, we’ll inspire others to host some of their own so we can keep all the excitement year-round. We want to show that Yazoo is a unique destination that continues to bring visitors back time and time again. Showing locals these exciting opportunities will ultimately have a positive outlook on Yazoo County as a whole.”
