Based on Monday’s unofficial results from the municipal primary runoff election, incumbent Charlie Jenkins did not secure the Democratic bid for the Ward 1 alderman seat in the upcoming Yazoo City elections.
Challenger Deyoung Haymer earned the most votes with 181 votes compared to Jenkins’ 115 votes. Haymer will now face Independent candidate Carl Mitchell in the general election.
With a total of 2,361 registered voters in Ward 1 of Yazoo City, only 296 registered voters went to the polls Monday night.
Within the upcoming general election in April, two posts will appear with both Democratic and Independent candidates for voters to determine those next leaders on the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
Those posts include the mayoral seat with Macklyn Austin, who now sits as the Ward 2 alderman, representing the Democratic party against Independent candidates Calvin Thomas and Woodrow Walker.
The other post includes the Ward 1 alderman seat with Democratic candidate Haymer and Independent Mitchell vying for the post.
With the Ward 2 post vacate following incumbent Austin’s run for mayor, Pattie Taylor-Wright secured the majority of the primary vote during February’s primary election. With no Independent candidates for the Ward 2 post, she will be the only candidate on the general election ballot.
Incumbent Jammie McCoy was unseated in the primary for the Ward 3 alderman post in the earlier primary election. Challenger Zelda Baker will be the only candidate on the general election ballot since no Independent candidates are running for the Ward 3 post.
Incumbent Elizabeth Taylor held onto the Ward 4 alderman post after the primary elections. With no Independent candidates for the Ward 4 post, she will be the only candidate on the general election ballot.
The general election will be held on April 6.
