The Yazoo County Board of Supervisors is preparing for many of next year’s grant submissions, with one project including a renovation to the local health department.
Tim Mood, county economic development director, asked the county board to begin the process to pursue a Community Development Block Grant through the Mississippi Development Authority. The application submission period of CDBGs is May of 2021.
“That is a competitive program,” Mood said, during the county meeting Monday. “All these applications are scored once they are received. Beginning this process helps get points for future applications. Sometimes applications are submitted to the state, and they haven’t even taken the steps yet. Therefore, they don’t get points.”
Mood said the county does have a project that may qualify for a grant along the lines of a public facility.
“The state of Mississippi gets about $23 million dollars a year from the Housing and Urban Development,” Mood said. “They set aside a portion of that money for public facilities, CDBG and economic development. What I am talking about today is for public facilities. The county health dept has some ADA issues and concerns. Those issues qualify for community development block grant funds.”
A similar grant was awarded to the county a few years ago with the Yazoo County Courthouse.
The minimum amount for the CDBG is $100,000. The grant could be used at the county health department for a number of renovations included plumbing and parking along ADA guidelines.
The county board approved pursuing requests for architectural purposes and requests for administrative services. They also designated the board as the selection and review committee of those proposals.
