Yazoo City’s Walgreens store will be closing forever on November 9.
The Yazoo store is one of one of 26 Walgreens stores set to close soon nationwide, and one of two stores that will be closing in Mississippi. The Walgreens in D’Iberville is also closing in November.
The departure of Walgreens marks another blow to a local shopping center that has been left with the majority of its space unoccupied after the departure of failing companies. Fred’s shut down last year, and the Payless Shoe Store folded earlier as both national chains closed.
Neither of those stores have been filled by new businesses.
Retail chains have presented a challenge for Yazoo City’s economy in recent years. The Gordmans store at 49 Junction closed soon after opening. Like Fred’s and Payless, the Gordmans closing wasn’t unique to Yazoo City.
The Willie Morris Parkway was expected to attract new businesses after Walmart opened a new store in Yazoo in, but so far no other businesses have emerged.
