The Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department has been busy over the last few weeks with making a felony drug arrest, assisting with a theft and reporting a contraband entry attempt at the local county jail.
Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said the month of February began with a felony drug arrest after a routine traffic stop. On Feb. 1, close to 11:30 p.m., a white Buick LeSabre was pulled over by deputies for a minor traffic violation.
“A short investigation revealed a felony amount of drugs and over $2,000 in cash,” McCoy said.
Cleotice Barton was charged with several drug possessions. He was released from custody on a $60,000 bond.
An alleged petty thief also found himself behind bars after home surveillance footage revealed his crime at a residence on Monroe Street in Yazoo City.
David Lee Wright, 53, was charged with petit larceny, trespassing and possession of paraphernalia.
“Wright was caught on camera stealing a package off the porch of a residence,” McCoy said. “The owner of the home brought the video into our department, and, within minutes, Wright was located on Broadway and placed under arrest.”
In other sheriff department news, a package was discovered by correctional officers at the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility. The package was found by correctional officers making their rounds inside the fence of the recreational area.
“This transaction was interrupted because of the correctional officers who are trained on what to look for,” McCoy said. “Contraband entering a facility is very dangerous, and we are so thankful to have caught it. We appreciate the great job by the correctional officers.”
