In two separate incidents, local deputies were able to remove a large amount of drugs and an impaired driver that could have led to a dangerous situation off the streets.
The Thanksgiving week began with an arrest on Highway 49 following the discovery of a large amount of drugs and prescription pills.
Daquan Barnes, 23, was arrested following the incident.
Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said a white Jeep was observed driving recklessly on Yazoo County’s main thoroughfares. After deputies pulled over the vehicle, they made quite a discovery.
“Deputies initiated a traffic stop and noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” McCoy said. “Upon further investigation a large amount of drugs and several pills were found. This successful apprehension exemplifies our dedication to maintaining a secure environment in Yazoo County. To those with criminal intentions, be aware that under my leadership, Yazoo County will not be a sanctuary for unlawful activities.”
Three days later, deputies noticed another reckless driver, swerving from lane to lane. The white 18-wheeler was pulled over by deputies at about 9:45 p.m. last Friday.
“Deputies quickly initiated a traffic stop and made contact with this individual who was clearly impaired,” McCoy said. “He admitted to using meth, and several other drugs were positive in a urine sample that he consented to.”
Robert Robertson, 60, of Greenville, was charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving.
McCoy said with major highways coming through Yazoo County, he will not tolerate impaired truckers putting the public at a dangerous risk.
“Those vehicles are far too big to be operating while under the influence of anything,” he said. “We are not giving any breaks. I do not care about your load or your job when you put lives in danger in such a careless manner.”
In other county crime news, two suspects were also arrested last week in connection to a number of thefts.
Alexis Abernathy, 32, and Chance Creel, 25, have both been charged with multiple counts of grand larceny and burglary.
“After being caught on camera breaking into a mobile home, these two were quickly identified and apprehended,” McCoy said. “Creel also confessed to stealing a side-by-side as well, which was recovered.”
McCoy said his department worked closely with the Flora Police Department in the burglary investigation.
