Earl Davis Gary, age 104, passed peacefully after a remarkable life marked by faith, service, and devotion to family.
He was born on April 12, 1921, in Yazoo County, Mississippi, to Eugene and Gertrude Johnson Gary. He was known throughout his life simply as Davis, and was affectionately called “DD” by his grandchildren.
In 1943, Davis married Lois Lee Myers, and together they shared 77 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, commitment, and family. They were blessed with one son, Alan Davis “Butch” Gary (Neetsie).
Davis devoted 47 years to the banking industry, beginning his career in 1941 as a “runner.” His professional life was briefly interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Air Force, where he served honorably until his discharge in 1946. Following his military service, he returned to banking, where he remained until his retirement in 1988 as Senior Vice President.
A man of integrity and strong work ethic, Davis earned a reputation as a respected community leader, a devoted father, and a cherished grandfather. As “DD,” he was a steady, loving presence whose wisdom and quiet strength will be deeply missed.
He was a longtime member of First Methodist Church, where his faith guided his life and values.
Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Gertrude Johnson Gary; his beloved wife of 77 years, Lois Lee Myers Gary; and his sisters, Wylma Golden and Mary Alice Gary.
He is survived by his son, Alan Davis “Butch” Gary (Neetsie); grandchildren Kelli Chandler, Lee Gary, and Ryan Gary; great-grandchildren Alix Deschamp, Evans Gary, Holland Gary, Wells Gary, and Emerson Gary; great-great-grandchildren Dylan Deschamp and Lincoln Deschamp; and step-granddaughter Kim Woodard.
A private family graveside service will be held at Fletcher’s Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Bill Poole officiating, under the direction of Stricklin King Funeral Home.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care and support, as well as his devoted caregivers Mary, Francis, Gladys, and Diane, whose love and dedication meant so much to Davis and to the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Methodist Church, P.O. Box 444, Yazoo City, MS 39194; St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; or the charity of one’s choosing.
Davis lived his life rooted in faith, and now rests in the promise of eternal life, reunited with those who went before him.
