A man remains in a Jackson hospital in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the head, and four horses are dead following a shooting at a local horse track in the Vaughan area last weekend.
Terry Gann, chief deputy with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said the investigation remains very active with no arrests as of press time. However, he said authorities have been called to that same track in the past.
The track, located on private property on Thomas Road, is used for horse racing and four-wheel riding, Gann said.
“This seems to be a recurring event on that particular property,” he added. “This incident and two prior ones have been reported out there. We are looking into what legal steps we can take to prevent this from happening again.”
Gann said his investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an incident that began at the local horse track, adding that he doesn’t believe it was a random shooting.
The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. last Saturday.
“We do know that one person was shot in the head, and four horses were shot during the shooting,” Gann said. “Three of those horses were dead when we arrived, and the fourth one had to be put down.”
Gann said the victim was taken by a private vehicle to a Madison hospital. He was then transferred to the University Medical Center in Jackson, where he remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
“We think it stemmed from an incident at the track, but we are still investigating it to determine what happened,” Gann said. “We are trying to get people to come forward and speak with us. Getting people to talk has been the biggest hurdle for us.”
