“They shot him in the leg so he wouldn’t run before they killed him.”
Tears filled the voice of a family member of Yazoo City’s latest juvenile murder victim, 16-year-old Jamonta Mitchell, as she shared the grief their family is experiencing with their loss.
Mitchell’s family spoke to The Yazoo Herald to make the public aware that they feel the murder of Lee is not related to the previous murders that have occurred among juveniles within the community.
“They are not related,” the family said. “Jamonta kept to himself. This is so sad to me to see all this happening with our children (in Yazoo City).”
According to Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers, Mitchell was pronounced dead on the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. He said the shooting occurred around midnight in Clubview Circle late last month.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations has taken over the investigation, as requested by the Yazoo City Police Department.
“Nobody has been arrested yet, and they have all the names and information they need to make one,” Mitchell’s family said. “The people who did this are walking around right now, living life like they have done nothing wrong.”
The Mitchell family also said communication concerning the case has gone silent.
“We don’t know anything about what is going on with the case,” they said. “Nobody has told us anything. But we live in constant fear. There have been no arrests in this murder case, and we are scared to even go anywhere because we are scared for our lives.”
