Following jail officials requesting an updated camera surveillance system on the county side of the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility, an officer was stabbed multiple times by a county inmate this morning.
According to Sheriff Jeremy McCoy, the incident occurred at the local facility around 10:30 a.m. this morning.
“A female officer was stabbed multiple times by a county inmate,” McCoy said. “There was also another county inmate who was stabbed as well. This situation is now under control and is currently being investigated.”
McCoy added that the officer and inmate have been treated.
News of the incident comes shortly after local jail officials told county leaders officials they are in an “emergency situation” with no surveillance on the county side. An estimate of $205,000 was provided by a vendor for a more updated camera system.
During the meeting on March 4, the county board said the board will take the matter under advisement until it can be determined if money from the depreciation fund can be used.
More details will appear in the next edition of The Herald.
