Three of the four inmates who escaped from the local county jail Sunday have been captured by local authorities. But one inmate remains on the run with investigators asking for the public’s assistance in reporting his possible whereabouts.
Yazoo County Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said at 11:38 p.m. Sunday, deputies noticed an inmate running back into the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility inside the fence area.
“Upon entering the jail, the deputies informed the correctional officers of what they saw,” McCoy said, immediately following the incident. “Correctional officers then conducted a headcount and noticed five inmates were missing. One has been caught and the other four are still on the run.”
McCoy said it appeared as if a door was breached leading into the outside perimeter of the facility.
“The inmates padded themselves with extra clothing to be able to cross over the barbed wire fence,” McCoy said. “They were able to get over the first fence. And then, with the extra padding of the clothing, they were also able to get over the second fence with the razor wire.”
The four reported missing from Sunday’s escape included Marlon Willis of Madison, Tenn.; and Glen Bassett, Marcus Green and Deliuwon Stowers, all from Yazoo.
As of press time, Bassett was the only escapee remaining on the run.
Chief Terry Gann, with the Yazoo City Police Department, also offered his department’s assistance in the matter, adding that law enforcement agencies from neighboring counties also joined.
Gann said Stowers was apprehended on Fouche Pit Road. He added that Green and Willis were arrested in other areas, including Shady Lane and Belzoni.
A Criminal History
The four suspects have a lengthy criminal history with law enforcement.
Green, 19, was booked into the county jail on April 19, 2023 on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing law enforcement and burglary following an arrest by the local police department.
Willis, 46, was booked into the county jail on Dec. 13, 2023 on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, providing false identification and escape followed by an arrest by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Stowers, 18, was booked into the county jail on Dec. 11, 2023 on charges of resisting arrest, trespassing, attempting to commit an offense, exhibiting a weapon and tampering with a witness following an arrest by the local sheriff’s department.
Bassett, who remains on the run, has made headlines in the past with a variety of criminal activities. In May of 2022, The Herald reported Bassett’s arrest by the local sheriff’s department for allegedly stealing several pieces of equipment from a Yazoo County hunting camp. He was charged with grand larceny and felony fleeing.
Gann, who was serving as chief deputy at the time, said the burglary occurred at a hunting camp on Redmond Road in the Benton area with two side-by-side UTVs, a four-wheeler and trailer reported stolen from the location.
At the time of Bassett’s 2022 arrest, Gann said he was apprehended by Rankin County authorities for felony possession of a firearm. A hold was placed upon him, and he was brought back into Yazoo County.
McCoy said that four correctional officers have been charged in connection with the escape. More details will appear in the next edition of The Herald.
