The Yazoo City Thanksgiving Service will be held this weekend with guest preacher Rt. Rev. Dr. Dorothy Sanders Wells, Bishop of Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi.
The community-wide service will be held on Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. at CrossLife Church, located at 100 Graball Road.
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Dorothy Sanders Wells was ordained and consecrated as the eleventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi on July 20, 2024 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, Ridgeland. She was seated in St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Jackson, on July 21, 2024.
Bishop Wells, who was ordained to the transitional diaconate and priesthood in the Diocese of West Tennessee, served as rector of St. George’s Episcopal Church, Germantown, Tennessee, from 2013 until arriving in the Diocese of Mississippi in May, 2024.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Bishop Wells completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Rhodes College, and her Juris Doctor degree from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis. She practiced employee benefits law for 18 years until she left the practice of law to follow God's call to ordained ministry. Bishop Wells has been committed to the work of community dialogue, racial healing, and justice and equity for all of God's people. There are some special features about this service,” said Rev. George Woodliff, with the Yazoo City Ministerial Association. “Under the direction of our vice-president, Pastor Edward Taylor of Word of Faith Christian Center, we are asking area churches to donate bags of food to the service to be distributed at the end of the service to people with SNAP cards in response to the suspension of their cards.”
Woodliff encourages the community to attend the annual services.
“In light of the recent explosion at the CFI plant with no injuries, I believe we have much to be thankful for this year in Yazoo City,” Woodliff said.
