The Junior Auxiliary of Yazoo City hits the ground running with a new program geared towards young ladies, teaching them vital life skills and how to contribute back to their community.
The Crown Club, which is available for tenth through twelfth grade teenagers, will work hand-in-hand with the local JA chapter in a variety of civic duties, fundraisers and programs to instill an appreciation for themselves and the community they serve.
JA President Mary Margaret Thomas said she was excited about the program being established in an effort to involve younger ladies with some of the many projects the local civic club promotes. Serving the Yazoo community since 1959, JA provides a vital service to local children with literacy programs, teaching fundamentals of life, all while having fun and developing friendships.
Thomas said Crown Club has been discussed for a few years, and she is excited that the new program is finally taking off. She said she hopes that the foundation of giving back to one’s community will remain with the young girls as they get older and perhaps return back to their community to live and work.
“If you are willing to serve when you are young, you are more willing to serve when you are older,” Thomas said.
Thomas said the program could also offer scholarship opportunities in the near future. The Crown Club will also organize its own special project within the community.
