Yazoo City voters will head to the polls today to determine the next leaders within the city’s mayoral and Ward 1 alderman post.
The general election will be held today with polls open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Those posts include the mayoral seat with Macklyn Austin, who now sits as the Ward 2 alderman, representing the Democratic party against Independent candidates Calvin Thomas and Woodrow Walker.
The other post includes the Ward 1 alderman seat with Democratic candidate Deyoung Haymer and Independent Carl Mitchell vying for the post.
With the Ward 2 post vacate following incumbent Austin’s run for mayor, Pattie Taylor-Wright secured the majority of the primary vote during February’s primary election. With no Independent candidates for the Ward 2 post, she will be the only candidate on the general election ballot.
Incumbent Jammie McCoy was unseated in the primary for the Ward 3 alderman post in the earlier primary election. Challenger Zelda Baker will be the only candidate on the general election ballot since no Independent candidates are running for the Ward 3 post.
Incumbent Elizabeth Thomas held onto the Ward 4 alderman post after the primary elections. With no Independent candidates for the Ward 4 post, she will be the only candidate on the general election ballot.
