Former city clerk Kaneilia Williams returns to her post within the city of Yazoo City after a 3-2 vote by the city council during its Sept. 25 Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.
Mayor David Starling moved to hire and appoint Williams as city clerk at an annual salary of $60,000. The motion was approved with Alderman Charlie Jenkins and Alderwoman Elizabeth Thomas in opposition.
But before the city council’s decision to hire Williams as the city clerk, she was already being paid by the city as a contract employee to assist with the city’s budget preparation and other clerk duties.
Williams first worked for the city of Yazoo City, beginning in August of 2017. The previous city council named her first as interim city clerk following the sudden resignation of former clerk Mario Edwards. Prior to being named interim city clerk, she served as executive assistant to former mayor Diane Delaware.
Williams resigned from the Yazoo City post a few years later, before being hired as Indianola’s city clerk in April of 2021. She remained there until she resigned last March, citing “a hostile work environment.”
