The state reading assessment scores after the final retests for the 2021-2022 school year show that less than ten percent of third graders within the Yazoo City schools are proficient in reading, and about 20 percent are proficient among third graders within the Yazoo County schools.
The Mississippi Department of Education recently released the third-grade reading assessment scores after final retests, which indicate that 54.8 percent of third graders within the Yazoo City schools are ready to be promoted to the next grade level. Within the Yazoo County schools, 71.3 percent are prepared for promotion.
Within reading, the state considers Level 4 and Level 5 as proficient.
Within the Yazoo City schools, third graders rank:
• Level 1, 38.9 percent
• Level 2, 29.9 percent
• Level 3, 21.7 percent
• Level 4, 9.6 percent
• Level 5, no percent indicated
Within the Yazoo County schools, third graders rank:
• Level 1, 25.3 percent
• Level 2, 21.8 percent
• Level 3, 32.2 percent
• Level 4, 19.5 percent
• Level 5, .5 percent
Students within both school districts, however, did see an increase in grade promotion based on the reading assessment retests. The third-grade reading assessment for promotion breakdown includes:
• Yazoo City schools, initial test, 35.7 percent met requirements with 64.3 percent not meeting; retest, 54.8 percent met requirements with 45.2 not meeting
Yazoo County schools, initial test, 56.3 percent met requirements with 43.7 percent not meeting; retest, 71.3 percent met requirements with 28.7 not meeting
Within math assessment state scores, less than ten percent within the city schools’ third graders are considered proficient. Within the county schools’ third graders, 21.2 percent are considered proficient.
Within math, the state considers Level 4 and Level 5 as proficient.
