The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released their State Employment and Unemployment Summary for September of 2025.
Unemployment rates were higher in September in 8 states, lower in 2 states, and stable in 40 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Eighteen states and the District had jobless rate increases from a year earlier, 9 states had decreases, and 23 states had little change.
nonfarm payroll employment increased in 1 state, decreased in 1 state, and was essentially unchanged in 48 states and the District of Columbia.
Over the year, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 15 states and was essentially unchanged in 35 states and the District.
The current unemployment rate for Mississippi (as of September 2025) stands at 3.8 percent.
For comparison, the unemployment rate for Mississippi in the previous reported month (August 2025) was reported as 3.9 percent.
Mississippi stands at a 0.4 percent increase from the same point the previous year (September, 2024).
Mississippi's unemployment rate at the beginning of the year stood at 3.6 percent (in January, 2025).
The national unemployment rate currently stands at 4.4 percent.
The national unemployment rate has remained unchanged from the previous month, and is at 0.3 percentage point higher than in September of 2024.
Mississippi stands at 3.8 percent (a 0.6 percent decrease from the national unemployment rate).
