Betty Lightcap Barrier passed away July 3, 2025 after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Betty was born in Yazoo City, MS on August 15, 1972 to Benjamin Jay Barrier and the late Laura Betty Lightcap Barrier.
Betty attended the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. She later transferred to Mississippi College, where she graduated with honors. Betty taught for 27 years at Webster School and Bentonia Gibbs elementary schools. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Yazoo City.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Laura Betty Barrier; her maternal grandparents, Clare Williams Brown; step-grandfather, Frederick Ward Brown; grandfather, Nathaniel Pugh Lightcap; paternal grandparents, Nell Beaird Barrier; and grandfather, Hilary Taylor Barrier.
Betty is survived by her father, “B.” Benjamin Jay Barrier; brothers, Jay Barrier of Yazoo City, Hibbie (Jeanie) Barrier of Nashville, Frederick (Rebecca) Barrier of Indianola; and longtime friend, Phil Higginbotham of Belzoni; and a host of nieces and nephews, who they affectionately called “Dearie.”
Visitation will be held in Martin Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. on July 8, 2025. Service will begin in the church sanctuary at 11 a.m. Stricklin-King Funeral Home of Yazoo City has been entrusted with arrangements.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Tammy Young, Dr. Margaret Wadsworth, and Dr. Maria Rappai. Also, the family would like to thank Shawn McCoy and Christy Vandevere for their friendship, guidance, and support.
