Dear Editor,
We were Red Cross volunteers in September, 2005, during Hurricane Katrina recovery and were heavily involved in the shelter that was established at the Yazoo City Army National Guard Armory.
On the 20th anniversary of Katrina, we reflect back on the good memories we have of the wonderful residents of Yazoo City and how they supported us.
Dorothy Creel was in charge of the local Red Cross chapter and welcomed us with open arms. She had shouldered a huge task and we were happy to come and help.
Louis Shipp was a chapter officer and was key in keeping some financial channels flowing for needy displaced persons through his bank.
Several church groups helped out including providing special meals, helping organize donated items and providing comfort and care for both clients and the volunteers. And the host Army folks who let us park our RV in a safe place with enough electricity to keep us cool. After 18-hour workdays, that was a godsend.
So, we send Best Wishes to a town we will never forget. You are always in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Hank And Joyce Whitney
