Following a routine traffic stop and a separate alleged disturbance at a local business, Yazoo County deputies recovered two stolen weapons off the streets.
Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said deputies responded to a disturbance report last week from the Dollar General in Bentonia, where store employees reported that there was a man they wished to be removed from the business.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered Zacchaeus Johnson and advised him that he would need to leave the local business.
“He initially gave resistance to the request,” McCoy said. “He did advise that he had a firearm in his backpack.”
It was later discovered that the firearm was reported stolen. Johnson, 26, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
“This was a great job by the deputies to handle this situation quickly with minimal disturbance to the business,” McCoy added.
In a separate incident, deputies made a routine traffic stop earlier this month for a minor traffic violation. Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana.
“A strong odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle and was also in clear view in an ashtray in the console,” McCoy said. “Upon further investigation, a handgun was also found inside the vehicle.”
The handgun was also reported stolen, and an attempt to scratch off the weapon’s serial number had also been made.
The driver of the vehicle, Elijah Williams, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
