Jackson has a new police chief, Dr. RaShall Brackney. The Jackson city council approved Mayor John Horhn’s selection with one dissenting vote, the Northside’s city council member Ashby Foote.
I can understand Foote’s vote. Brackney is a criminologist scholar, professor and book writer. She’s an intellectual. Jackson needs a drill sergeant police chief who can face down the gang leaders and tell them they have 24 hours to leave town.

Recent claims circulating online and in local television news regarding a customer’s account are false. JXN Water was not contacted to verify the allegations before the story aired. Failing to verify information about essential water utility services is a disservice to the public.

The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi’s 41st annual Bacchus Ball Gala was held recently at the Country Club of Jackson. The evening included regional music, Creole cuisine, and a silent auction.
Held during carnival season, the gala helps ensure the foundation continues its mission ministering to Mississippians living with type 1 or 2 diabetes. Caroline Lowe was chairman of the benefit with co-chair Holly Voller. Attending the event were (from left) Jay Patel, Addie Compere, Austin Lane.

Mississippi Museum of Art’s Art in Mind is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25 at 1 p.m. Registration is required. Art in Mind is offered to individuals experiencing memory loss or mild cognitive impairment. Participants can stimulate observation, recall, and recognition at home with basic supplies. The program is facilitated by Licensed Art Therapist April Fitzpatrick and an MMA Educator. To register, contact Jennifer Knight at 601-496-MIND by Friday, February 20.

The Braxton Volunteer Fire Department is set to celebrate a major milestone this spring, marking 50 years of dedicated service to the community of Braxton.
To commemorate five decades of protecting and serving local families, Braxton Fire Rescue will host a community-wide celebration and annual fundraiser on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
The celebration promises a full day of activities designed for all ages, along with several new and exciting additions to this year’s event.

Mayor Mark Grubbs gave updates on Magee water issues at the opening of the Board of Aldermen’s meeting on Tuesday, February 17.
The clear well tank has been sanitized and repainted, and the storage tank has been cleaned. Water samples taken were returned clear. Plant one is back up and running.
The sod and gate are the only remaining issues to be completed at City Park. Estimated time line is one week.
