The new year is moments away with many heading into 2026 on the hopeful desire to carry out several resolutions from a healthier lifestyle to self-improvement to other personal goals.
We are no different here at The Herald with our intention to maintain our focus upon our readers and community. Our resolution is to continue that relationship based on integrity, watchdog journalism and community outreach. The Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi presented its 49th annual Chimneyville Craft Festival at the Waller Craft Center in Ridgeland. All exhibitors in the festival were juried members of the Mississippi Craftsmen’s Guild.
The event kicked off with the Preview Party at the craft center. The evening included booths with the members’ work, hors d’oeuvres, open bar, and live music from Bill Ellison. Attending the event were (from left) Emily and Allison Kelly.

The Yazoo City Indians traveled to Brandon High School and faced the host team in the Brandon Holiday Christmas Tournament. Despite playing a close first half, the Indians struggled in the third quarter and eventually succumbed to the Bulldogs in a 70-55 loss.
The loss drops the Indians to 11-6 on the year.

Manchester's Ellie Carpenter scored a game-high 20 points and Angel Rae Carpenter chipped in with 14 as the Lady Mavericks coasted to a 55-17 victory over Deer Creek.
Manchester raced out of the gates to a 15-6 first quarter advantage before adding 16 more second quarter points to Deer Creek's three, to take a 31-9 lead at the half. The Lady Mavs continued their dominance in the third quarter, posting a 9-2 advantage before outscoring Deer Creek 15-6 going down the stretch to seal the win.

Richard Carrington Stockett Jr., 90, a retired realtor, died January 3, 2026, at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison.
A native of Jackson, Richard was born August 5, 1935 to Beth and Richard C. Stockett Sr. An Eagle Scout, Richard graduated from Central High School in 1953, and from Mississippi State University in 1957 with a B.S. in business. While at State, Richard was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa and also served as president of both the campus YMCA and of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Frances Saxton, 72, of Yazoo City, passed away on Jan. 2, 2026 at the Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
Funeral services will be held on Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. at Stricklin King Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Midway Baptist Church. Visitation will be held on Jan. 7 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bob Crechale's, the owner, passed away Christmas Eve after an illness. He bucked a trend by remaining in south Jackson in Highway 80 after most restaurants had moved north.
