On Monday, Attorney General Lynn Fitch delivered 50 Emergency Overdose Boxes and 2,000 Fentanyl Harm Prevention Kits to the City of Jackson as part of her One Pill Can Kill campaign, a public awareness initiative to educate, support, and empower Mississippians with information on the dangers of fentanyl, how to identify it, and what to do if someone is overdosing. Since launching her campaign, Mississippi saw a 39% drop in overdose deaths, largely due to the increased accessibility of naloxone and fentanyl test strips.
"Only a few grains of fentanyl can kill and it is increasingly found in counterfeit pills and vapes and other products. I am excited to partner with Mayor Horhn to spread the tools to help save lives from fentanyl overdose in Jackson. We are grateful to Jackson’s police and firefighters for making our Emergency Overdose Boxes and Fentanyl Harm Prevention Kits easy to access around the City," said Attorney General Lynn Fitch.
“Fentanyl continues to devastate families and communities across Jackson and our state. By equipping our first responders with the tools and training needed to save lives, we are taking proactive steps to protect our residents. I want to thank Attorney General Fitch for her leadership and commitment to fighting this crisis head-on," said Mayor John Horhn.
In 2023, General Fitch launched her One Pill Can Kill campaign to fight fentanyl. As part of the initiative, the Attorney General’s office is distributing Fentanyl Harm Prevention Kits - which include two fentanyl test strips, a safe drug disposal bag, and a pill identification card that identifies whether the drug is legitimate - to colleges and universities, law enforcement agencies, community mental health centers, and other community groups. Additionally, in 2024, Attorney General Fitch introduced her Emergency Overdose Boxes, which can be mounted in public places and include naloxone and other tools needed to prevent a deadly overdose. The Emergency Overdose Boxes were developed in coordination with Harbor Path, a nonprofit dedicated to putting naloxone within arm's reach of anyone who needs it.
