A revised grant application will be resubmitted for the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department to potentially receive assistance with the Mississippi Alcohol Counter Measure and Impaired Driving Grant.
Deputy Jackie Hudson, with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, appeared before the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors last week to share the department’s need for the grant through the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
“This grant is needed for Yazoo County, and hopefully we will get it,” Hudson said.
The Mississippi Alcohol Counter Measure and Impaired Driving Grant is designed to reduce alcohol and drug related fatalities and injuries on roadways. Programs within the grant include alcohol countermeasures and impaired driving.
Alcohol projects include DUI prosecution, DUI judicial, law enforcement training, public education and outreach. These funds are strictly for alcohol only related activities, programs and projects.
The impaired driving program is for projects working to reduce alcohol and drug related fatalities and injuries on our roadways. Grant funds are used for educational courses and training.
“The grant application is based on 2022 statistics,” Hudson said. “We had five DUI-related deaths in 2022. And for the population of Yazoo County, that is considered extremely high. In 2022, we also had 283 injuries reported as alcohol related.”
The county leaders approved the grant submission.
