A Yazoo City man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to statutory rape.
District Attorney Akillie Malone-Oliver said Jamarcus Rembert, 22, was involved in a relationship with an underage female.
“With statutory rape, even if both parties were consensual, it still involves a minor,” Malone-Oliver said. “Based on state law, a minor cannot consent under 16 years old. It is still grounds for statutory rape.”
Malone-Oliver said Rembert has a history of “preying on young girls” through the Internet.
Judge Jannie Lewis sentenced Rembert to 20 years in prison, with ten years suspended. The court order also said that Rembert will be given a credit of 471 days for time already served.
Rembert will be placed on five years of supervised probation and five years of unsupervised probation. He must also register as a sex offender immediately upon release from incarceration.
