Although many businesses and other operations are reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic, local city leaders remind citizens that safety guidelines are still more important than ever.
During its recent meeting, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen extended its emergency proclamation that limits the gathering of more than 10 people, closes bars and limits access to restaurants and enforces a 9 p.m. curfew within the city limits.
“The city is opening gradually, not immediately,” said Mayor Diane Delaware. “Our cases of COVID are rising due to this opening so we must be vigilant in taking care of the health and safety of everyone. COVID is real, and it is a frightening thing.”
As of press time, Yazoo County had a total of 281 cases of COVID confirmed with the Mississippi Health Department.
Although Gov. Tate Reeves said that all businesses in the state can open on Monday, he also said local governments can set strict guidelines.
During the recent city council meeting, those guidelines set within Yazoo City will remain in place for now.
“It is important that we realize that if we care about people, the guidelines in place are there to save lives,” Delaware said. “Let this board be an example of how we should behave. We lead by example.”
