The Yazoo City Police Department has established a task force to address and follow up with domestic violence cases within the city.
And officers have already made five arrests in connection with its recent proactive approach to addressing violence within the home.
Those arrests include:
John Adams was arrested by Sgt. Joseph Pinkston and charged with two counts of domestic violence.
Kaya Robinson was arrested by officer Elizah Brooks and charged with domestic violence.
Sylvester Moton was arrested by Sgt. Joseph Pinkston and charged with aggravated domestic violence.
Jalen Porter was arrested by Sgt. Joseph Pinkston and officer Patrick Jaco and charged with domestic violence.
Mersenia Taylor was arrested by Sgt. Joseph Pinkston and charged with aggravated domestic violence and malicious mischief.
“Since I have been appointed at the helm, we are started really looking deeper into our domestic violence cases,” said Interim Police Chief Jay Winstead said. “We have recognized the fact that we are not doing enough follow up on those cases within our community.”
Winstead said officers are now actively revisiting with the victims of local domestic violence cases.
“At the initial calls with these cases, everything is heightened,” Winstead said. “Everyone is upset, and there are accusations that can lead to a hectic situation. Now a few days later, officers are touching base again with the victims to see where they are, to provide information that there are alternatives if they do not want to remain in that lifestyle.”
