Yazoo City’s nightclubs have been the source of problems for years, but Yazoo City Police Chief Jeff Curtis believes it’s possible to reverse that trend.
The Yazoo City Police Department has been working with local nightclub owners to ensure they are complying with the city’s ordinances, including having security that is licensed and bonded on site at establishments that serve alcohol and have more than 50 patrons.
The ordinances haven’t always been strongly enforced in Yazoo City, but Curtis said that will no longer be the case.
“The days of looking the other way are over,” Curtis said. “We are going to make sure that every establishment is following the law.
Curtis said officers have visited with owners of every establishment in the city.
“Each owner has been provided with a copy of our city’s ordinances and the state laws,” Curtis said.
Curtis said that most of the business owners have seemed eager to work with the police department.
“Since that time most of the club owners have done an outstanding job making sure they are complying with the law, including things like getting their licenses up to date at City Hall and making sure they are meeting the fire code regulations,” Curtis said.
Curtis said that nightclubs that follow the rules will have less problems. That will mean less burden on the police department having to respond to frequent calls and better business for the clubs with a reputation for being a safe place.
“As long as they are following the law, we want our local businesses to do well,” Curtis said. “We appreciate the businesses that are making sure they are following the law. This will greatly reduce the problems we have at nightclubs, and it will improve public safety.”
