Nominations remain open for many local committees as city leaders submitted a few names last week.
Mayor Diane Delaware said the nomination process has been sporadic in the past. But she said her office is researching how to restore the process back to its proper execution.
“All of our boards other than the school board should have someone coming off that board this year,” Delaware said. “And we should be appointing someone. However, somewhere along the way...our nominations got off schedule.”
Delaware said it may take some time to rectify, but should would like to see the procedure for future nominations and tenure schedules properly followed.
“I think people were appointed, not to end someone’s term but to stay on for a number of years,” she said. “I am not sure if we are going to have the time to complete that process, but we will work on it as long as we can to try to figure it out.”
Recent nominations included a vacancy on the Public Service Commission Board of Commissioner. The term of PSC member Edna Rogers was up for renomination.
Ward 2 Alderman Dr. Jack Varner nominated Rogers to serve another term.
“She has been very faithful and very well informed about the work of Public Service,” Varner said. “I would like for her to continue to serve.”
Delaware also nominated Johnny Wilson for the PSC seat.
In the Housing Authority, the seat of John Meeks was up for nomination for the 2016-2021 term..
Varner nominated Meeks to continue his service to the board.
Delaware also nominated five people for the newly-established Keep Yazoo Beautiful committee, including Sheila Trimm Young, Joyce Campbell, Mary Wilkinson, Grace Ingram and KK Hill.
For the Historic Preservation Committee, Ward 1 Alderman Ron Johnson nominated George Dixon.
The nominations remain open until the next city council meeting, when voting will take place.
Ward 3 Alderman Rev. Gregory Robertson also reminded Delaware that she was to present committee guidelines to the board.
“I promise I am trying, but I have got so much on my plate,” she replied.
