Interim Police Chief Jay Winstead said the police department was prepared for a busy Memorial Day weekend. But he said he was thankful the community pulled together for a safe and reasonably quiet holiday.
“Considering it was a three-day holiday, we prepared for the worst,” Winstead admits. “But we were so pleased with the community coming together to make this a safe and enjoyable holiday. We had no violent crimes over the weekend, and we also didn’t have too many COVID curfew violations.”
Winstead said officers did have to respond to a few house parties that were over the limit of the COVID gathering restrictions.
“But none of those were as bad as we have seen in the past,” Winstead said.
Sgt. Joseph Pinkston and officer Morris Minor did make an arrest over the holiday weekend in reference to a curfew violation that led to a significant drug arrest.
Jabari Travis was charged with possession of MDMA (ecstasy), possession of paraphernalia, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, suspended driver’s license, curfew violation, disorderly conduct, open container and driving under the influence.
“The suspect was already out on bond from previous drug charges earlier this month,” Winstead said.
