Investigators say Dequan Mitchell has gotten away with stealing family pets before.
But he picked the wrong house Monday afternoon.
Lamar Tindle, a deputy with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, was concerned when his dog Georgia wasn’t at home. The Tindle family immediately began spreading the word that their beloved pet was missing. That led to a tip that someone driving a green Honda Accord was seen stopping and grabbing Georgia.
The tip set the stage for an investigation that led to Mitchell being arrested and charged with grand larceny and hindering an investigation.
Georgia was found inside a trailer on Davis Street.
Sheriff Jake Sheriff said Mitchell admitted to stealing the Tindle family’s dog and said that he has stolen other dogs before.
“Georgia was going to be used for dog fighting,” Sheriff said. “When we found her she was being held with no food or water.”
Georgia has been reunited with her family and is expected to fully recover. The investigation continues, and more arrests could be forthcoming.
