The Public Service Commission will begin aggressively pursuing collections from customers who have failed to pay for their utilities over the last few months.
During its Tuesday meeting, the PSC Board of Commissioners approved sending letters out in an effort to collect nearly $25,000.
“The letter will state that they have ten days to come in and make some sort of arrangement,” said Mike Wilson, of the PSC. “Then, we will start cutting them off.”
Wilson said there are $24,569 worth of unpaid utilities with customers who haven’t paid their bills over 60 days.
“If they can pay a third of their bill for four months, that would catch most of them up,” Wilson added. “We have done this before, and it worked. We just got off track enforcing it. But we have got to do it again because it did work the first time.”
Dr. William Nelson, chairman of the commissioner board, said it may be unpopular with some, but it is time for the PSC to get paid or start cutting utilities off.
“It’s time for this,” Nelson said. “We need to do it now because bills go up in the summer for us. Do it now because monthly bills are not so high. We as commissioners may get some phone calls, but it’s something we have to do.”
