A broken water line is behind the recent settling of a portion of the newly-constructed Willie Morris Parkway.
Wayne Morrison, city engineer, said the settlement began to show a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving.
“It is not a defect in construction,” Morrison said. “The irrigation line in the flower beds broke, releasing water under the pavement.”
Morrison said solutions are being researched, and the road will be repaired.
Also, the construction of WalMart continues on the parkway with the final details being ironed out before the store’s March opening.
Morrison told the Public Service Commission Board of Commissioners this week that shelves and displays will be installed in the building beginning on Jan. 23. He also said the store is still on track to open for business on March 15.
“They are paving today with the last layer of asphalt,” Morrison said, during the PSC board meeting. “They couldn’t pave sooner because it has been so cold. It’s warm now so they are finishing up.”
Morrison said everything is falling into place for the store’s finishing touches.
“It’s coming and coming well,” Morrison said. “The beginning part and the end part are always the hardest part. But we’re getting there.”
