As the year nears conclusion, city officials want to remind the public that inspections required by ordinances will begin again with the new year.
The building inspector and fire marshal will begin their inspection process over again next year to ensure all businesses and structures meet the necessary requirements within Yazoo City.
During the recent city council meeting, Assistant Fire Chief Ricky Harris reminded the public about Fire Marshal Kenny Washington’s process beginning with the new year.
“The fire marshal has caught up with all his work for the year and will soon start his process all over again,” Harris said.
Mayor Diane Delaware said many citizens may be unaware of the fire marshal’s duties within the city. However, she said it is a process that must be followed.
“I think individuals may not understand that the fire marshal has an obligation,” she said. “His job is to inspect every business in Yazoo City once a year. He has to get into that business. The doors have to be open. And there are some folks who ask why is he coming here. His job is to inspect every business…”
Delaware said the fire marshal’s inspections are similar to the procedure that Building Inspector Russ Carter must also follow.
“Each of us may have fire hazards,” Delaware added. “It is our municipal obligation to ensure that we inspect every business. This is not just within Yazoo City. This is all over Mississippi, all over every state.”
In other fire department news, Harris said response calls had decreased within the department for the month of November in comparison to last year.
Harris also said the department has smoke alarms available for citizens. Provide a name and address to the fire department by calling 746-2841, and a firefighter will install an alarm for you.
