The investigation team within the Yazoo City Police Department has been successful in the number of cases that were settled prior to heading to court.
Chief Ron Sampson said that 26 cases were presented to the Grand Jury last week, but 14 of those cases were settled with plea deals.
“Our investigators did such an excellent job of putting those cases together,” Sampson said, during the recent city council meeting. “There were no court procedures because the suspects felt better taking the plea deals that heading into court.”
Mayor Diane Delaware said she has observed the hard work within the police department’s investigation team, adding that is extremely proud of the work that is being produced within the department.
“Stay the course,” she said. “Being successful and handling ourselves in the way we do things is somewhat new to Yazoo City. It takes a long time to deploy change and to try to shift. Thank your team.”
Sampson said there have been “headaches” within the department, particularly with the investigation surrounding the Main Street nightclub shooting that left one man dead and many others wounded.
“However, we got two people who were on our list,” Sampson said. “We continue to work to bring that case to a close.”
In the Main Street shooting case, Malik Sneed was charged with first degree murder and Jarvis Brown was charged with aggravated assault.
