Yazoo County Tax Assessor Beverly S. Ladner and her staff remind homeowners that the deadline for filing Homestead Exemption is April 1.
If you purchased a new home in 2015 and you were living there Jan. 1, 2016, you will need to file Homestead Exemption for 2016. Your deed had to by acknowledge by Jan. 1 and filed by Jan. 1 to be eligible for 2016.
The requirements for filing Homestead Exemption are:
1. Your Social Security number, and if married, your spouse’s Social Security number.
2. Purchase price of your home (not including finance charges).
3. Down payment amount (if any).
4. Current tag numbers of any vehicles you own.
5. Proof of age if you are over age 65.
6. Proof if you are 100 percent disabled.
7. Proof if you are a 100 percent disabled service-connected veteran.
If you currently file Homestead Exemption and you had a change in your homestead in 2015, you will need to re-file for 2016.
Those changes include:
1. Marry, divorce or separate.
2. Became 65 years old or 100 percent disabled.
3. Change of the ownership or occupancy of the home.
4. Spouse deceased.
5. Acquire more property adding to the homestead or selling part of the homestead.
6. Becoming a 100 percent disabled service-connected veteran.
