A Yazoo City homeowner was shot Thursday night while attempting to protect his property from three individuals breaking into his vehicle outside his home.
Police Chief Jay Winstead said the homeowner was struck in the left leg while trying to protect his property from three criminals, who remain on the run. The victim was taken to a Jackson hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has been released.
"Cases like this are concerning for me because people are going to protect what they own," Winstead said. "Property owners won't always call us first but rather do what they feel they have to do to protect their property. This is concerning because somebody is going to get killed one day. These items that these criminals are trying to steal are not worth somebody dying."
The incident occurred right before midnight Wednesday outside a home on Barnwell Circle.
"Three individuals were breaking into the homeowner's car," Winstead said. "The homeowner came out armed, and gunfire was exchanged between the homeowner and the suspects."
The investigation continues, and no arrests had been made as of press time.
