Using a team of K-9s and drones, along with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks, the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department was able to safely locate an elderly man who had been reported missing in rural Yazoo County last week.
Sheriff Jeremy McCoy said his department received a report on June 10 around 9:30 p.m. that an 84-year-old male was reported to be lost in the woods. Upon arriving at New Concord M.B. Church, the man was identified as John Spires.
“He had been in the woods since around 9 a.m. and had not come back out,” McCoy said. “I immediately reached out to MDWFP to provide assistance to find him as quickly as possible.”
McCoy said a family friend was able to reach Spires on his cell phone throughout the search, but the reception was poor.
“Being dark, he wasn’t really able to tell us where he was,” McCoy said. “He could also not hear very well, which made the search even more difficult.”
A team of K-9s and drones were deployed to assist with the search. And after a four-hour search, Spires was eventually safely located.
“I would like to thank everyone who came out to help,” McCoy said. “I am so glad that Mr. Spires was found safely.”
