The Democrat Party is made up of multiple factions, all with their own agenda and all with demands that weaken many of our most honored institutions.
For example, if you read or watch news programs, you might think that the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender) community makes up about 30 percent of our population. The truth is that the LGBT community makes up less than 1 percent our population, yet, their influence is profound in our modern society.
For this reason, the institution of marriage has come under brutal attack. The Supreme Court has ruled that a man has the right to marry another man and a woman can marry another woman. Somewhere along the way, the Supreme Court failed to consider the fact that traditional marriage has been around for thousands of years, and it works because usually a man and woman have children, and this system works best because it guarantees the children the best chance of survival.
Many in the Christian community believe strongly that marriage should be between an man and a woman. If you go to the Middle East, the belief is even stronger. Individuals who are found to be homosexual are put to death. Remember what the Iranian President said when he was asked about how homosexuals were treated in Iran. “We do not have homosexuals in Iran,” he replied. “If you know of any, please let me know.”
None of us believe that anyone in the LGBT community should be physically harmed, but on the other hand, we believe that those in the LGBT community should not be given a license to wreck the lives of people who have strong moral and religious beliefs against homosexuality.
In Georgia a few months back, a TV crew searched the state until they found a young woman who ran a mom and pop pizza parlor. They asked this young woman if her pizza parlor would cater a gay wedding. She said that because of her religious beliefs that she would not cater a gay wedding.
Believe me, her world came to an end. She received death threats from around the country and soon, her pizza parlor was out of business. She was called every name in the book including intolerant and homophobic, all because she had traditional religious beliefs that were strongly held.
A bakery shop was put out of business in Texas because the owners refused to bake a cake for a gay couple. Additionally, they were sued and had to pay a large sum of money because the court held that they discriminated against the couple. Their religious beliefs were ignored.
In Mississippi, there is an effort afoot to impeach Governor Phil Bryant for signing the “Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act.”
The First Amendment to our federal Constitution guarantees all of us religious freedom, but apparently those guarantees are not enough. The State of Mississippi has to pass a “Religious Freedom Act,’” that allows our citizen who have strong moral and religious beliefs to practice their religion without interference from government.
But the “Religious Freedom Act” has stirred up a hornet’s nest. For two weeks after its passage, every letter and editorial by some of our newspapers condemned this act and demanded that it be repealed. Of course, this was an organized effort by the LGBT community in an attempt to sway public opinion.
The law itself (House Bill 1523) is only eleven pages long. It is written in simple language so that everyone who wants to can read and understand it. Some large companies have said that they will not locate or re-locate to Mississippi because of this bill. This knife cuts both ways. Mississippians have the right to refuse to buy their products. This is a good bill. It is unfortunate that it is necessary because of the failure of the courts to enforce the First Amendment to the Constitution.
Our most valued institutions are under ferocious attack. It reminds me of the old saying, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” Americans need to toughen up and decide if they want a country where anything goes, or do they want a country that honors its institutions that have been successful for hundreds of years.
