Yazoo City native Tangela Banks has been named the new head women’s basketball coach at Hinds Community College's Utica Campus.
Banks arrives in Utica after a successful stint at Murrah High School where she served four years as the head women's basketball coach, the head track coach and the school's athletic director.
"We are excited about the opportunity to have Tangela Banks as our new head coach for the Lady Bulldogs," said Athletics Director Gene Murphy. "Banks is a Hinds alumnae and is from our community. She knows this area and has had great success here. She possesses all the qualities in a person, coach and leader that we were looking for. We look forward to the future of the Lady Bulldogs Basketball program behind the tutelage of Coach Banks.”
While at Murrah High School, Banks' overall record as head women's basketball coach was 101-23. She won three district championships (2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17). Her 2015-16 team won the 6A State Championship, and she was awarded the 2016 Mississippi Association of Coaches Coach of the Year Award. This past season (2017-18), her team finished as the 6A State Runner-up.
Prior to Murrah High School, Banks served as the head girls basketball and track coach at Jackson's Forest Hill High School from 2010 to 2014.
A Yazoo City native, Banks has an associate's degree from Hinds Community College, bachelor's and master's degrees from Jackson State University and certification in sports administration from Belhaven College.
Other than her team championships, she has numerous personal awards including 2016 MAC Coach of the Year, JSU Trailblazer Award 2018 and 2013 Clarion-Ledger Coach of the Year.
