Lady Mavs win district titleBy CATHRYN CARTWRIGHT,
The Lady Mavericks walked away with another championship after Manchester Academy hosted the District 2 AA Tournament last week.
The Lady Mavericks started off the tournament by facing off against their rivals from Tri-County Academy. From the beginning, the Manchester girls started out slow, ending the first half 17-16.
After a talk with Coach Emily Poe during half-time, the Lady Mavericks came out of the locker room with a different take on the game, outscoring their opponents 35-20 at the end, and winning the game 52-43.
"I was proud that we came out and picked up the intensity after the half," Coach Poe said.
With their first win in the bag, the Manchester girls advanced to the championship game against Greenville Christian School, who had split games with the Lady Mavericks earlier in the season.
Coach Poe said that the game had all the hype it deserved, since it was the very same scenario as in the 2018 season, when Greenville Christian took home the district championship.
The battle was on at the beginning of this match-up, when the Greenville Christian girls came out and jumped on the Lady Mavericks, leading 22-17 at the end of the first half.
"I think that our nerves were showing a lot in the first half," Coach Poe said. "We could not get in a rhythm on offense and we just looked out of sync on defense."
After the half, Coach Poe said that the Lady Mavericks picked up their offensive game with a big 3-point shot from Anna Kate Griffin, followed by back to back 3-pointers from Lanie Potter.
"The Lady Mavs hit six 3's in the second half," Coach Poe said. "Lanie hit four, Lizzy Carpenter his one, and Anna Kate Griffin hit one."
The leading scorers in the game were Lanie Potter with 26 points, Ivy Sowell with nine, and Lizzy Carpenter with seven.
"I was so proud of my girls, they fought hard and came out victorious," said Coach Poe. "I would like to say a big congratulations to Gracie Jones, Lanie Potter, and Ivy Sowell for being selected to the All Tournament Team."
The Lady Mavericks will move on to play Winona Christian in the North State Tournament hosted by Marshall Academy on Wednesday, Feb. 13, starting at 6:45 p.m.
