Chloe Edwards nails game-winning three-pointer

Yazoo County senior guard Chloe Edwards, like most kids, has probably counted down an imaginary clock while shooting baskets in her driveway before. Three, two, one…bang!

Well, that scenario became a reality Saturday as Edwards drained a dagger three from the right corner to snatch victory from the Northwest Rankin Lady Cougars and give the Lady Panthers a 32-31 win.

The Lady Panthers opened the game with a 10-8 first quarter as the guard play of Edwards, Akeriunna Frierson and Jordan Scott helped offset the post production NW Rankin was getting from their 6-2 center Taylor Dupree and A’Mya Johnson.

The Lady Cougars outscored YCHS 7-6 in the second quarter and trailed by one, 16-15, at the half. The action stayed at the same pace throughout the game as neither team could ever get more than a five point lead until late in the fourth quarter.

Lady Cougar Deandria Spann nailed a three-pointer with 5:16 left in the game giving NWR the biggest lead either team had posted the entire game at 28-22. The Lady Panthers, however, scored seven unanswered points (three from a Scott long distance shot and a pair of layups courtesy of back-to-back steals from Scott and Frierson) to take a 29-28 lead. After a turnover gave the Lady Cougars the ball back, Spann hit a go-ahead three pointer, giving Northwest Rankin a 31-29 lead with 1:33 left.

The Lady Cougars left too much time on the clock and Edwards was able to nail the game winner giving the Lady Panthers the win.

Edwards led Yazoo County with 12 points, followed by Scott who posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Frierson with nine.

“That was a big shot, but she’s a big shot maker,” said YCHS head coach Christine Demus. “We’re going to need her to play like that all season. This was our first game and while we’re always happy with a win, we were able to see some things that we need to improve. We definitely have to get some scoring from some other players but as long as we continue to play hard and together, we’ll be fine.”
